Early Hearing Detection and Intervention System (EHDI)
Iowa's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program works to ensure that all newborns and toddlers with hearing loss are identified as early as possible and provided with timely and appropriate audiological, educational, medical intervention and family support. The EHDI program is also dedicated to providing unbiased support to families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

1st Five
1st Five, Healthy Mental Development Initiative is a project funded by the Iowa Legislature to assist medical practitioners in providing social/emotional, family stress and parental depression screenings to children during well-child medical exams. If a red-flag is detected through this screening process the family is then linked to Visiting Nurse Services for care coordination services. These care coordination services are offered to address the needs of the entire family. 1st Five understands that the health and well being of family members directly impacts the health of an infant or young child. After resource and referral information is provided to the family, the VNS Care Coordinator then apprises the referring medical provider to the outcome of the referral. Call 515-558-9959 for more information.

Iowa Medical Home Initiative
The Iowa Medical Home Initiative (IMHI) has begun working with partner practices utilizing a facilitaive model for implementing the Medical Home Elements established by the Center for Medical Home Improvement. Even though the practices have just begun, much learning has already occurred during the planning process of the Initiative. Many practices are aware of the elements of a “Medical Home”; Accessible, Family-Centered, Continuous, Comprehensive, Coordinated, Compassionate, and Culturally Effective. Practices have developed systems to deliver this type of care at varying levels. Many obstacles prohibit the development of better systems of care for children with special healthcare needs.
